The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), was set up in 1949. It is a Confederation of national trade union centres, each of which links together the trade unions of that particular country. Membership is open to bona fide trade union organisations, that are independent of outside influence, and have a democratic structure.
The ICFTU organises and directs campaigns on issues such as:
- the respect and defence of trade union and workers' rights,
- the eradication of forced and child labour,
- the promotion of equal rights for working women,
- the environment,
- education programmes for trade unionists all over the world,
- encouraging the organisation of young workers,
- sends missions to investigate the trade union situation in many countries.

The AFI-IPL – institute for the promotion of employees – is a public entity dedicated to labour market research, information, training and consultancy, all about the subject labour. The institute is located in the city of Bolzano/Bozen in the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol/Alto Adige. It was founded in 1992 and is under supervision of the provincial government. The governing bodies are composed of members of the local trade unions, members of the local social associations as well as representatives of the local government administration. The institute receives its funds mainly from the provincial government but also from European institutions.
