Up-date English translation of new Dutch Working Conditions Act 2007

The new Working Conditions Act (Arbowet) came into force on 1 January 2007. The act includes a lot of changes in relation to the previous Working Conditions Act, which dates back to 1998. Instead of general regulations imposed from above, the new act makes provisions for tailor-made rules. Employers and employees can now consult with each other before laying down agreements to ensure a safer, healthier and more pleasant workplace. The Labour Inspectorate will trust in these agreements, but will take firmer action if the rules are abused. Go to the translated dutch legislation >>

Astrid Joosten announced the winner of the Good Practice Competition during the ‘Lighten the load’ conference held on 22 October. She made the announcement at the start of the annual European Week for Safety and Health at Work. The Lelystad-based company Dycore BV was the victor in the Netherlands 2007 Good Practice Competition. The company's employees thought up their own clever structural solution for handling heavy pallets weighing 28 to 35 kilograms. The actual product was modified by cutting a recess in the polystyrene foam bottom layer of the ribbed floor, allowing the forks of a fork-lift truck to lift the ribbed floor. As a result, employees only have to lift 1.3 kilograms. This is an enormous reduction in their physical burden. Dycore has also been nominated for the European Good Practice Award. Work-related illness and accidents should be cut by a quarter across the EU under a new five-year strategy for health and safety at work, adopted by the Commission today. It follows a 17% reduction in fatal accidents from 2002-2004 and a 20% fall in accidents leading to absence from work of three days or more. But progress remains uneven across different countries, sectors, companies and categories of workers. Changes in working life are leading to new occupational risks, while certain workplace illnesses are on the rise. More information on the EU strategy>>
